Mam Tor

For my second instalment I decided to repeat my first ever hill walk, probably from 30 years ago (scary…) when I was in the Scouts.  I remember one of our Scout leaders giving us a briefing a few days before about safety in the mountains, and the old motto “Be prepared” so for my first hill walk I packed a huge old frame rucksack with a complete change of clothes and enough food for the whole group…  My editing skills have improved a bit since.

Starting from the main car park in Castleton and climbing through Winnats Pass.  From Winnats Head Farm, I headed across Windy Knoll (which always makes me chuckle… sorry…), before the ascent up the bronze age hill fort of Mam Tor.

From there it was a simple ridge walk (avoiding the patches of ice as much as possible) through Hollins Cross, over Back Tor and on to Lose Hill before dropping back down past Losehill Farm, Spring House Farm and Lose Hill Hall, emerging back at Spital Bridge for the short walk through Castleton and returning to the car park.

Approximate total ascent: 451m / 1480ft

Cumulative total: 698m / 2292ft
